Errors on titles can happen — what do you do?

If an error is identified on an issued title, the first step is to contact the County Clerk of Courts Title Office where the title was issued. They will indicate if this is an error that they can correct (office error vs. customer error), how it would be corrected (replacement vs. void), and what documentation is required, if any.

If the issuing County Clerk of Courts office determines they can not assist in the title correction, please refer to information provided by Ohio BMV Title Support Section below for their title correction process.

If the incorrect mileage, VIN, or brand (exceeded, salvage, non-actual, buyback) was due to a customer or dealer error, please contact the BMV Title Support Section for assistance at 614-752-7671.

For a mileage/brand correction, as in a case where mileage exceeds mechanical limits or non-actual miles:

  • Requests for correction(s) will be reviewed and verified.
  • Failure to submit all required documents may result in the request being denied.
  • If approved, a letter will be issued asking the County Clerk of Courts Title Office to issue a replacement title correcting the mileage, VIN, or brand.

Please note: a request for a correction does not guarantee approval of the correction. Prior to completing a title transfer, the transferor and transferee must verify the accuracy of the odometer listing and all other information on the certificate of title. Both seller and buyer are responsible for accurately verifying the odometer listing and all other information on the certificate of title at the time of title transfer.

What do I need to submit to the BMV Title Support Section?

When correcting an error, you must submit these items:

Notarized Statement(s) of Fact which must include all of the following:

  • Contact name, address, phone number, and current date (business statements must be on letterhead)
  • Vehicle year, make, model, and serial number/VIN
  • A detailed explanation, including when, how and why the error occurred
  • The incorrect information along with how it needs to be corrected
  • Proper notary language (“Subscribed and sworn...”), including the county and state information. The notary must be on the same page as the statement of fact(s).

Current, dated Federal Odometer Statement or Applicant Affidavit.

  • Odometer Disclosure Statement (form BMV 3724)
  • Applicant Affidavits are acceptable for:
    • Vehicles sold or purchased through repossession
    • Self-assembled vehicles
    • Unclaimed affidavits
    • Out-of-state title conversions
    • Operations of law (such as bankruptcy or death of a spouse)

Provide a clear photo of the current odometer reading

  • Mileage must be stated as it was as the time of the error rather than the current reading.

Additional information may be requested.

Vehicle Serial Number/VIN Correction

If there are three or less errors in the VIN printed on the title, then we may be able to assist with a title correction. Below is the process:

  • Request for correction(s) will be reviewed and verified.
  • Failure to submit all required documents may result in the request being denied.
  • If approved, a letter will be issued asking the County Clerk of Courts Title Office to issue a replacement title correcting the mileage, VIN, or brand.

Please note: a request for a correction does not guarantee approval of the correction.

Welcome back Warriors! This is the continuation of our series all about YOU.

The month of appreciation

November is a time of gatherings, reflection, and transition from Autumn to Winter.

It is a month where warm, golden hues, along with browns and oranges take center stage in our workspaces as well as our homes — filled with smells of cinnamon, apples, pumpkin pie, and some serious comfort food!

Celebrations of food, family, and friendship start to fill up our thoughts and our calendars. Just saying the word, "November," stirs up memories of Novembers past. It is a time of reflection. A time of gratitude. A time of thanksgiving. It reminds us of who was with us in the past during this special month, as well as those who are no longer with us. It reminds us all that we are all truly blessed beyond measure, to keep a grateful heart and a thankful heart.

November is the month with a definite attitude of gratitude. As we start thinking about our plans for this month, the food, the family, the friends, we also think about people who are alone, people who don't have what we may have. And we give. We help out at local food banks, we serve others, we share with our neighbors. We also smile a little bit more, and we are a little nicer to each other. It is a magical time of year.

It is also a time of work. We Warriors work a little harder, trying to make sure that our desks are all caught up so that we can enjoy Thanksgiving with our families and friends. We also start to get a little stressed out, so remember to take some time to center yourself each day. Give yourself the gift of some "alone time" so that you can relax, pray, meditate, or just listen to nature during a nice walk in the mild fall morning or evening.

This month’s treat for YOU

November is a time to nourish both your body and your mind. We've talked about nourishing your mind, now let's talk about nourishing your body!

I have a recipe for a super easy, delicious, guilt-free, sugar-free pumpkin pie that I would like to share with all of YOU!

This recipe is by Chris Cooking Nashville, an incredible chef that cares about good healthy options for some of our favorite comfort foods. He is AMAZING! I asked Chris for permission to share this video and recipe with all of YOU, and he graciously agreed. Check it out using the link here! I personally will be making this pie this year, and I hope that YOU will LOVE it as much as I do!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Warriors! I'll be back next month as we continue to celebrate this Year of YOU! ♥️🥧
