How to fix it
Step 1: Have the customer update their address with the DMV. You’re legally required to notify the DMV of your new address within a certain timeframe after moving.
In person at local DMV office (appointments may be available online) or over the phone are the quickest ways to update.
Step 2: Confirm the update. Once the update is completed on the state side, retry the transaction that triggered the error.
Step 3: Contact the DMV, if needed. If the error persists, speak with a DMV representative.
- Call DMV Customer Service: Find your local County Tag Office by visiting this website and finding contact information on the linked pages: https://dor.georgia.gov/county-tag-offices
- Ask for a DMV Supervisor: If the first rep can’t help, escalate the issue.
- Provide documentation: Have proof of residency ready (e.g., utility bill, lease, mortgage statement).
Step 4: If It’s a DMV mistake. Stay calm and present your evidence. Some users have resolved similar issues by faxing documents to the DMV’s error correction unit, especially when payments were misapplied.
