The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) recently shared an update on the revised identification requirements for title and registration transactions.
These revisions apply to both initial registration and registration renewal transactions though they have different effective dates:
- New ID requirements for initial registration went into effect on March 5, 2026.
- New ID requirements for registration renewals will take effect on January 1, 2027.
For acceptable ID requirements, refer to List A – Acceptable ID for Transactions and List B – Acceptable Photo ID for Transactions on page 3 of the TxDMV bulletin.
Note: A valid, unexpired driver license or state ID issued by a state that requires proof of legal presence is acceptable, including those marked “limited term” or “temporary.”
