Did you know that when you process a Temporary Tag for an out-of-state customer, an MD ID number is created? It’s listed on the Temporary Tag. The MVA system now cross-references out-of-state customer names and ID numbers, and if the customer already has an ID number, you will receive the following error:

This error message can be confusing when the address was already manually entered in the transaction, making the correction for the error unclear. To resolve the error, simply enter the MD ID number that was created when the customer bought a vehicle in Maryland.
How do you find the MD ID number that the customer doesn’t even know they have? If the customer previously purchased a vehicle in Maryland that they still own, or are trading in, you can run an MVR on that VIN and the MVR will have the customer's MD ID number.
